Hello everyone,

As some of you may know we have a lot going on with the St Albans council at the moment in the way of getting more opportunities for the whole community to be as free to practice Parkour as possible. However we are told that there is a great deal of discussion going on within the council about us and what we do. You will be pleased to know that we have a number of councillors on our side in that they want us to be able to practice Parkour outdoors and are keen to promote other safe-training aids such as the Tuesday Parkour gym-session. Unfortunately there are of course others who would rather see the session shut down and a ban put in place on Parkour as a whole in St Albans.

A lot of this dislike has been caused by reports that there are people practicing Parkour on rooftops.

As this is the main point of concern the Herts Parkour team is asking anyone who practices Parkour in St Albans not to use rooftop spaces.

Furthermore if you know of anyone who does use roofs (and is continuing to do so) please inform them of this notice for the benefit of the entire community.

Many thanks to everyone for the great attitude that we as a community have at the moment,

The Herts Parkour Team.

Could I also make the point of avoiding anywhere that is very private property, such as round the back of a building, and to move on straight away when asked?

I'd also like to mention that it is not difficult to find information and media concerning the Herts Parkour community. There are videos and pictures showing some of the more adventurous members, no names but it's obvious, using rooftops.

Now as impressive as these videos are, they could be one of the causes for concern from the S.A. council. They may have picked up on it and used it to prove what has happened in the past, especially since staff at the arena took it upon themselves to confiscate personal property (ie a camera) at the time. Funny, but sneds out a bad message, a very 'punk' thing to do.

Just my two cents on the matter.

Hopefully the decision of the council will reflect on the community as a whole and not just some iduviduals and while it is in the past it could also reflect on decisions. But for all we know it could be an agreement just not to go on rooftops but hopefully the main decision will reflect on the whole community Beginners intermediate and vetrans (y) And thanks for the update Ben :)
In Parkour You train. You train untill your muscles burn and your veins pump battery acid......... And then you train some more.

i think the main point of the video, is that it was before the council started to fund our sessions. this is something we will be taking very seriously.

Peace

@ SerFox, i can guarantee you that it was definitely not that video nor those people that are causing the problems now. That was filmed way before any problems with the council started, and neither of them train in SA as regularly as others.

How would they ban Parkour? I mean, how would they set rules to classify what is parkour and what isn't. Really, if they want us off the roofs, then put up some signs and make a law or something saying we can't go on roofs. Or use laws already in place, make it tresspassing or something.
Parkour doesn't bother anyone as long as we don't get in the way, and stay off private property. It seems silly to ban anyone from practising it.

It is silly to ban anyone from practicing it. In reality that wouldn't affect us at all because it is our right to move - besides a society that does not allow freedom of movement is a terrible existance indeed. If that happened we would need to make some serious plans, however, I don't think it will. Besides even if they put up signs saying 'no parkour' it's not like we would be breaking any law to move in a public place. I'd like to see them arrest a toddler for running along a wall.

Anyway it hopefully won't come to any of this because we are working overtime trying to coax the council into understanding our purposes. As long as we have an understanding then there will be no problem, however one of the first conditions/requests of this understanding is that we do not use rooftop spaces. Hence the message.

Going on Rooftops IS trespassing. The roofs are not public property, they belong to someone, so it IS illegal to be on them, regardless of whether it's signed or not.
It's stupid to think that you need signs to tell you what to do and what not to do. I think i'll go on a rampage and stab everyone in Luton twon centre, there's no signs telling me not to.
Of course they can't ban parkour, but they can stop you training, it's obvious to see parkour training so how annoying will it be if you couldn't train in one spot for more than five minutes before being told to stop?
Guildford council banned parkour, so herts can too.
Which is why people need to stop going on roofs, not because they've been told not to, but to save their art.

Rooftops. Done.

Seriously, how hard is it to think 'is this place owned by anyone, therefore making it not for public access?' If the answer is yes, don't go there!

If in the unlikely event we get 'banned' from training, and cannot stay in one spot, then surely we'd just take after other forms of training that involve a lot of moving around, following a line chosen by the leader, parkour tag and so on. Not exactly strict training and conditioning, but moving like that the council wouldn't be able to do anything.

Best course of action right now though for you guys? Prove you're not just a bunch of youths mucking about. Same happened here in Edinburgh as far as I can tell, but we chose the infamous location of Bristo Square for our location, already renowned for bad tempered skaters and boarders
